I grew up in the 80s so as you can probably imagine a little cup of Jello was in all of my middle school lunches. The sweet, fruit flavored gelatin made the perfect school treat and reminded me of my grandma and her endless supply of retro Jell-O moulds. That’s why when I saw someone on TikTok making this broken glass jello dessert I knew it would have all the nostalgic feels and I couldn’t wait to make it.

What is Broken Glass Jello?

Broken Glass Jello is a retro dessert made of several flavors of gelatin that are sliced into squares and then layered into a bundt pan where a creamy gelatin is poured on top to create a jello dessert that looks like stained glass windows when you slice into it. It’s equally stunning and delicious.

How to Make Jello Broken Glass Dessert?

First you add hot water to each flavor of Jello into shallow baking dishes and whisk until fully combined. Then you allow the gelatin to chill in the fridge. Then you slice the flavored Jellos into squares. *I couldn’t find blue Jello at my local grocer so I brought this pre-made package and sliced it into squares and it worked just fine.

Then you layer the squares of flavored Jello into a Bundt pan.

Next you dissolve two packets of unflavored gelatin in 2 cups of hot water and allow it to cool to room temperature. Then you whisk in sweetened condensed milk. Then pour that over the flavored Jello squares into the cake pan.

Next you allow it to chill until fully set. Then slice and enjoy!

What Does Broken Glass Jello Taste Like?

The fun thing about this Broken Glass Jello dessert is that you can change the flavors to whatever you like. Use sugar free Jello if you like, use just one flavor Jello, or use every flavor. It’s all up to you. The white part of the cake tastes like creamy vanilla, but the other flavors can be whatever you like.

Variations

I made this particular broken glass Jello as a bi dessert to celebrate Valentine’s Day with pink, purple, and blue (from the bi flag). But, you can use any flavors/colors of Jello that you like. A rainbow one for Pride Month, a green and red Jello combo for Christmas, or red and pink for Valentine’s Day would all be fun variations.

My Jello Isn’t Holding Together When I Slice

If your Jello is not staying firm as you slice it, simply pop it back in the fridge for an extra hour and it should be much better! Also make sure not to follow the directions on the Jello box that calls for hot and cold water. We are only using the hot water to make a sweeter, firmer gelatin.

Tips for Broken Glass Jello Dessert

Why is my Jello falling apart!

  • If your Jello is not staying firm as you slice it, simply pop it back in the fridge for an extra hour and it should be much better! Also make sure not to follow the directions on the Jello box that calls for hot and cold water. We are only using the hot water to make a sweeter, firmer gelatin.

The White Jello Melted the Colored Jello

  • Be sure to allow the white gelatin sweetened condensed milk mixture to cool down before pouring it on top of the flavored gelatin to avoid the flavored Jello melting.

Can you make Broken Glass Jello ahead of time?

  • Yup! I like to make it the day before, but it will stay good in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days, but it does not freeze well.

This old fashioned broken glass jello recipe with condensed milk is so easy and really fun to make!

Ingredients

  • 1 (3 oz) box pink Jello (strawberry, cherry, or raspberry)
  • 1 (3 oz) box grape Jello
  • 1 (3 oz) box blue Jello
  • 3 cups boiling water
  • 2 (.25 oz) packets of unflavored gelatin
  • 1 (14 oz can) of sweetened condensed milk
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla flavoring or extract

Instructions

  1. Gather 3 8x8 or 9x13 inch baking dishes for your flavored Jello. Pour each flavored Jello powder into its own baking dish. Then add 1 cup of hot water to each and whisk until the powder is fully dissolved.
  2. Chill until fully set and solid, about 3 hours.
  3. Once fully set, slice each flavor of Jello into small cubes. Don’t worry about them being perfect, it’s ok if they’re a little misshapen.
  4. Lightly grease a Bundt cake pan with canola oil, using a paper towel to remove any excess.
  5. Layer the different flavors into the grease cake pan, dispersing them evenly so the different colors are spread out nicely.
  6. In a medium-sized mixing bowl, whisk together the 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin with 2 cups of hot water until dissolved. Allow it to cool slightly, then pour in the sweetened condensed milk and vanilla flavoring.
  7. Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature so it doesn’t melt the flavored Jello. Evenly pour the mixture over the cubes in the cake pan.
  8. Allow to set int the fridge overnight.
  9. Place a large plate over the cake pan and carefully flip the dessert onto the plate.
  10. Slice and Enjoy!
