If you’re anything like me Heated Rivalry has taken over your life. I have re-watched the Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov series more times than I can count at this point. The beautiful love story that captivated audiences all across the globe with its strong commentary on toxic masculinity, vulnerability, and acceptance was perfect in nearly every way. Every way except the smoothies! The purely liquid watery runny mess that Scott Hunter slurped down was rough for us smoothie drinkers to observe.

What I honestly think went wrong with the blueberry smoothies in Heated Rivalry was that they used too much liquid and that the smoothie melted as the show was filming. So I can’t really hold it against them. And it detracted absolutely nothing from this incredible show or Scott and Kip and their adorable love story.

So here’s what I think Kip would actually make for Scott. A thick, rich smoothie made with frozen wild blueberries, vanilla yogurt, protein powder, almond milk, and of course EXTRA BANANA.

How to Make a Good Smoothie

The trick to making a really good smoothie, in my opinion, is making sure it stays thick and creamy. I want it to be the exact texture to drink through a straw, but not so thick it needs to be eaten with a spoon (that’s a smoothie bowl).

To do this you need to start with frozen fruit and then add creamy elements like yogurt and bananas. Then add just enough plant based milk for the smoothie to run properly. Extra ingredients like spinach and protein powder are great to amp up nutrition. Plus the protein powder adds even more creamy texture.

Start the blender on low and as the ingredients come together increase the speed to high. As soon as the creamy texture is reached quit blending and drink immediately.

Ingredients

Blueberries

  • I use frozen blueberries to make sure the smoothie has a nice, thick texture. Wild blueberries are especially good in smoothies.

Spinach

  • Spinach is my favorite green to add to smoothies, but make sure not to go overboard with how much you add. I like between 1/2-1 cup to for a rich, good tasting smoothie. Kale works great too, but can have a little stronger flavor and be a little tougher for your blender to break down.

Bananas

  • A fresh, creamy banana is a must in any smoothie. The delicate flavor and rich texture are the key to bringing the smoothie together.

Yogurt

  • I love using vanilla Greek yogurt in my smoothies, but plain greek yogurt also works. I do recommend using Greek yogurt instead of regular yogurt because of the extra thick texture.

Protein Powder

  • There’s a ton of protein powders on the market today. I tend to use whatever is on sale, so just use whichever is your favorite.

Almond Milk

  • Almond Breeze Unsweetened is my favorite milk to use for smoothies. It’s the perfect creamy texture and great flavor. I also use the Costco almond milk and while it’s not quite as creamy, it does work well in smoothies.

Are smoothies good for you?

Yes! Smoothies are very good for you. They’re packed with fruits and veggies and if you want to amp them up even more you can add things like nut butters or seeds. They’re a great way to start your morning with a balanced amount of calories from fat, fiber, and protein.

Help! My Smoothie is Too Runny!

  • If your smoothie is too runny, drink it up and try these tricks for next time.

  • Make sure your blueberries are frozen.

  • Don’t add too much almond milk, just enough for the blender to run smoothly.

  • Drink it as soon as it’s done blending.

We don’t want a Heated Rivalry smoothie fiasco.

Variations

If blueberries aren’t your favorite then feel free to swap them out for other fruits like strawberries, peaches, or dragon fruit. If you want an even more filling smoothie add nut butters like almond butter, sunflower butter, or peanut butter. If you dislike almond milk you can use oat milk or soy milk in this blueberry smoothie recipe.
